Man Charged With Baby's Murder

CANTON, GA -- Cherokee sheriff's detectives have upgraded charges against the boyfriend of the woman whose 24-day-old baby died late last year.

Canton resident Nicholas Campbell, 27, is now charged with murder in the death of Ciara Campbell, the Cherokee Sheriff's Office said.

Campbell, along with mother Alyssa Kincaid, 25, have been in custody at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center since December 2015 in connection to Ciara's death.

The official findings from the autopsy on Ciara were released in late June, and the medical examiner "reported the manner of death to be homicide and cause of death as “craniocerebral trauma," the sheriff's office added.

Kincaid was initially charged with one cruelty to children in the second degree, possession of methamphetamine and probation violation, Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee Sheriff's Office said. Baker also said Kincaid also had a warrant for her arrest issued by Marietta police.

Nicholas Campbell was arrested on four counts of cruelty to children in the first degree, four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of battery and possession of methamphetamine.

The investigation into Ciara's death started when deputies responded to a call Dec. 10 of a child not breathing at a home located off Magnolia Springs Drive, Baker previously told Patch.

Ciara was transported to Northside Hospital-Cherokee by Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services crews. She was later taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta where she died three days later.

Baker said “multiple injuries” to Ciara were discovered and after conducting interviews with Campbell, his mother and grandmother, he was arrested.

Kincaid was arrested during a traffic stop in Holly Springs.
