Man Charged In Fatal Canton Accident (UPDATED)

Police say the driver, Freddie Perdue, allegedly tried to flee the scene of the crash on foot, but was taken into custody.

CANTON, GA -- A Cobb County man has been charged in connection to a fatal car crash that took the life of his passenger early Saturday morning in Canton.

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office has charged 37-year-old Freddie Perdue of Marietta with vehicular homicide in the first degree, vehicular homicide in the second degree, reckless driving, weaving over the roadway and driving too fast for conditions, the agency said Sunday.

Deputies responded to the crash around 7:26 a.m. June 24 on Interstate 575 near Riverstone Parkway to find the wreckage of the vehicle, which was traveling southbound before the collision occurred. The passenger, identified as 33-year-old Shantavia Roberts of Dallas, was pronounced dead at the scene, sheriff's office spokesperson Sgt. Marianne Kelley said.

Canton Police Chief Mark Mitchell told Patch Perdue allegedly tried to leave the scene of the accident on foot, but was taken into custody by officers. Perdue was later transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where was treated for a broken leg, Sgt. Kelley added.

He was transported back to the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center where he's being held on a $32,266 bond.

Along with the charges filed by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office, Sgt. Kelley said Perdue will also face charges in connection to his alleged attempt to escape by the Canton Police Department.
