Pedestrian Hit By Car On I-575 In Cherokee County

The man was walking away from a disabled vehicle when he was struck by a car Wednesday afternoon near Exit 19 in Canton.

CANTON, GA — A man is in the hospital after he was hit by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 575 in Canton, the Cherokee Sheriff's Office said.

The Canton Police Department responded to the collision around 2:42 p.m. Aug. 1 on the northbound side of the interstate just south of Cumming Highway/Ga. 20. A preliminary investigation indicates a vehicle was traveling northbound when it swerved to avoid colliding with traffic that slowed down and struck a man who was walking away from a disabled vehicle, said sheriff's office spokesperson Jay Baker.

That pedestrian, identified as Christopher Varnadore, 35, of Andrews North Carolina, was hit while walking in the emergency lane. Another person walking next to Varnadore was not hit by the car, Baker added.
