Officers were dispatched around 5:24 p.m. Nov. 18 to the San Rafael convenience store at 555 Marietta Road. A motorist at the store told officers a tall man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt allegedly got into the back seat of his vehicle while he was in the store.

When he returned to his vehicle, the victim said the suspect “held him at knife point, and told him to drive and demanded money,” Canton police said.

The victim told police he did not give the suspect any money, and the man eventually exited the vehicle. Following up on leads, witness statements and surveillance footage from the store, Canton detectives and Cherokee Sheriff’s Office deputies began to canvass the area for the suspect.

Two officers in the downtown Canton area observed the suspect entering into a vehicle on Main Street, and officers moved in to arrest the man.

Grant Johnson Gober, 36, of Canton was taken into custody and charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault.

Canton Police Chief Mark Mitchell thanked the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in helping arrest the suspect.

“We are extremely grateful that the victim was not physically harmed in this case and that our officers and detectives were able to quickly arrest the suspect to bring resolution to this criminal act, and further our efforts to improve the quality of life for the citizens and businesses in our community,” he added.

Gober remains at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center with no bond, Lt. Jay Baker with the sheriff’s office said.
