GEORGIA — The new year and next decade is upon us, and with it comes the time to celebrate the arrival of 2020. In Georgia, there will not be the traditional Peach Drop this year, so families may be wondering where to celebrate. Luckily, our state has plenty of unique options to ring in the new year.

The Possum Drop

Arguably one of the most well-known ways to celebrate New Year's Eve in Georgia is at the Possum Drop in Tallapoosa. For animal lovers, don't worry, it's not a real possum but a stuffed animal. Festivities kick off at 6 p.m. Tallapoosa is a roughly 45-minute drive from Atlanta on I-20 West. There will be food vendors, live music and a kids zone offered. There will not be seating, so organizers suggest bringing a small, folding chair. No pets or alcohol are allowed, but nearby restaurants will be open and serving drinks. For those staying at the nearby Hampton Inn, the "Possum Express" will shuttle you to the event. Limited tickets to the VIP tent will be sold at $15 a person, or $20 a couple.

Geranium Drop

McDonough’s Mayor Billy Copeland will kick off the event at 9:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Come dance the year away in historic downtown McDonough as midnight approaches, and as the geranium drops. The city is ending this decade as a celebration of all decades. Come dressed in your favorite decades attire — '70s bell bottoms, '80s big hair or your best '90s. Enter the decades costume contest, and dance the night away with live music and DJ. The entertainment lineup will include live music by No Limitz Band and DJ Doug Sheets. There will be food and drink specials from downtown restaurants, like Gritz, Holy Smoke BBQ, Kirby G’s.
