Resident: Harry Johnston Leaves "Very Large" Shoes To Fill
A Cherokee County resident is praising the District 1 commissioner for his 14 years of public service.

Editor’s note: the following is a letter to the editor submitted by resident Gary Hite
Dear editor,
The citizens of Cherokee County have been most fortunate to have had Harry Johnston as a member of the Board of Commissioners for the past 14 years. During that time, he demonstrated repeatedly his honesty, energy, maturity, work ethic, knowledge and understanding of the most fundamental needs of our wonderful county and its citizens.

In the more distant past years, he served during some very tumultuous times when commission meetings at times more closely resembled a mixed martial arts match than a Board of Commissioners meeting. To his great credit and to the benefit of the citizens, he maintained and exhibited a thoughtful, mature and frequently calming influence over the proceedings to assure that county business was conducted.
Fortunately times have improved and Harry was a major contributor to improved policy development and to improved procedural and behavioral matters on the BOC.

Harry leaves very large shoes to fill. To his credit, Commissioner-Elect Steve West has reached out to some of Harry’s supporters, of which there are many in recognition, I believe of the good work Harry did for the people of our dear county.
It will take an honest, sincere, thoughtful and knowledgeable person willing to sacrifice a great deal of personal and work time to step into Harry Johnston’s shoes to serve us with the same level of caring for the people of Cherokee County that Harry did.
Harry, you served with distinction and you should be proud of it, as are your many, many supporters and friends. Enjoy your time away from public service and spend it with family and friends of which you have a never ending supply. Thanks again Harry for your service to our dear county.
