Starting at 1 p.m. July 26, the funeral procession will travel along multiple state routes, including Cobb Parkway (S.R. 3/U.S. 41), Interstate 575, S.R. 92 and S.R. 20, GDOT added.

The funeral will start at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Woodstock and once the procession enters Cherokee County, the Woodstock Police Department will implement the following traffic control measures:

  • At approximately 1:30 p.m., Woodstock police will join other law enforcement agencies as the funeral escort exits Interstate 575 northbound at Exit 7 onto Highway 92.
  • At this time, all intersections along Highway 92 leading to the church, located at 11905 Highway 92, will close down to motorists and an officer will be present at each intersection. All intersections along Highway 92 will open shortly thereafter.
  • Upon conclusion of the service, which is expected at around 3 p.m., Woodstock police and other law enforcement agencies will lead the funeral procession to the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.
  • As such, intersections along Highway 92 leading to the on-ramp of I-575 northbound will shut down until the procession passes through.

Once the procession leaves Woodstock and travels to Canton, GDOT says motorists should expect rolling lane closures along I-575 through Holly Springs and Canton until it departs at Exit 16A towards S.R. 20. The route will then turn left onto S.R. 20 and continue westbound until it reaches the Georgia National Cemetery.

Rolling lane closures are expected to take place along S.R. 20 until the procession clears the road.

Wells was among four Marines who were gunned down during last week’s shooting rampage at the U.S. Naval Recruiting Station.

Local law enforcement will escort the funeral procession. Along with preparing for the lane closures, motorists should also exercise caution while traveling in the area.
