Scam Alert: Reports Of Paying Off Warrant To Avoid Arrest Resurface

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office will never have a deputy call residents and ask for money, the agency said on Tuesday.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office is once again reminding residents that a deputy will never contact them and request a payment for any reason.

This latest public service announcement comes on the heels of the agency on Tuesday taking three reports from residents who said they were contacted by a caller who identified himself as a deputy with the sheriff’s office.

According to the sheriff’s office’s press release, the caller would explain to the resident that they had an active warrant out for their arrest and “gave instructions on how they could pay off the warrant,” Lt. Jay Baker with the agency said.

“This is a scam,” Baker stated. “Any similar calls where someone claims to be a deputy and asks for money is also a scam.”

Residents are advised not to give the caller any personal information and to report the calls to authorities if they are targeted by the scam.
