Sheriff's Office Completes Construction On Firearms Training Complex

The Shaw – Woodard Firearm Training Complex GPSTC-Cherokee is named after two deputies who died in car accidents while on patrol.

CANTON, GA -- On Friday, the Cherokee Sheriff's Office celebrated an important milestone in its agency.

The agency held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of its Shaw – Woodard Firearm Training Complex GPSTC-Cherokee, which was named after two deputies who lost their lives since Sheriff Roger Garrison has been in office.

Deputy Dana Denise Shaw, a two year veteran with the department, was killed Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, in an automobile accident while on patrol at 4:20 a.m. on East Cherokee Drive.

Deputy Timothy “Wayne” Woodard, another two-year veteran with the sheriff's office, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in a fatal crash on S.R 369 while responding to a home invasion.

State Sen. Brandon Beach served as the keynote speaker at the event.
