Sheriff's Office Hosts Training To Prepare For 'Civil Unrest'

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office last week partnered with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Atlanta Field Office and the United States Attorney’s Office to host a training session on how local law enforcement agencies should respond to civil protests.

Entitled Preparing for Civil Unrest in Georgia, the four-hour course allowed class participants to hear from instructors such as Richard Goldberg of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Special Agent Felipe Den-Brok, crisis management coordinator for the F.B.I., and Cedric Alexander, deputy chief operating officer of DeKalb County Office of Public Safety.
Instructors trained officers on topics such as Law Enforcement Preparation for the 21st Century Protest, Federal Response To Events in Ferguson, Missouri, and Baltimore, Maryland, and Leadership Management in Times of Civil Unrest.

The class ended with a panel discussion on best practices and lessons learned from various events.
That panel discussion included input from J. Britt Johnson, special agent in charge of the F.B.I.’s Atlanta Field Division, Atlanta Police Chief George Turner, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia John Horn, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan and Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison.
161 officers from 58 different agencies attended the training.
