Sheriff's Office Names Reserve Deputy of the Year
Sergeant Mark Newton was given the honor during the Cherokee Sheriff's Office Reserve Unit's annual banquet.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Reserve Unit hosted its annual banquet on Wednesday in Canton.
Reserve Sergeant Mark Newton was named the 2014 Reserve Deputy of the Year during the ceremony.
Sgt. Newton has worked for the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office for approximately 13 years.

In 2014, the CSO Reserve Unit consisted of 11 deputies, staffed by 8 certified and 3 auxiliary members. The unit functions as a service arm of the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office. In 2014, the Unit performed a total of 4,423 volunteer hours for the sheriff’s office.
Tasks included civic events, DUI Task Forces, Uniform Patrol and Adult Detention Center shifts.

Last year the unit utilized over $15,000 in donations from the generous citizens and businesses of Cherokee County enabling the program to provide toys and basic necessities for 194 children of 74 families from 31 schools.
The unit also assisted 40 elderly residents of the county with comfort items and enough food for at least one meal during the Christmas holiday.
