Students, Teachers Celebrate Read Across America Day
Canton and Sixes students throughout the Cherokee County School District took part in activities to promote literacy.
Cherokee County School District schools across the county celebrated Read Across America Day last week.
During the first week of March, the students took part in activities designed to promote literacy and celebrate the birthday of children’s book author, Dr. Seuss.
Clark Creek Elementary School STE Academy: Clark Creek Elementary School STEM Academy celebrated with reading games, a ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ luncheon and guest readers throughout the school. Principal Dr. Jennifer Scrivner as ‘The Cat in the Hat’ greets student Joseph Nzaba-Loko of Acworth.

Holly Springs Elementary School STEM Academy: Holly Springs Elementary School STEM Academy hosted a ‘Book and a Blanket’ literacy night to celebrate the occasion. Students and their families showed up in their pajamas and enjoyed a night of reading in classrooms transformed into reading campgrounds or cozy nooks. Students had the opportunity to win books at the Bookwalk, shop at the Scholastic Book Fair, write the titles of their favorite books on a ‘graffiti wall,’ show off recent research by transforming into historical figures in the ‘Living Library’ and enjoy a slice of birthday cake in honor of Dr. Seuss.
Knox Elementary School: Students and teachers at Knox ES participated in activities including a Bookmark Contest, guest readers and a book character dress-up day. The Bookmark Contest winners from each grade level were awarded a framed copy of their art, and their bookmarks were distributed to students through the media center.
