Teasley Educator Named Finalist In Excellence In Teaching Award

CANTON, GA — An educator at Teasley Middle School has earned state recognition for excellence in teaching math. Dr. Iona Strougo is a 2018 state-level finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, a national awards program that recognizes outstanding teaching and leadership in the two subject areas.

“We’re so proud to see Dr. Strougo earn this recognition for the excellent instruction she provides her students on a daily basis,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian Hightower said. “A great teacher like Dr. Strougo not only helps students see math’s daily real-life uses, but also inspires them to pursue careers in STEM and other fields where math mastery is key.”

Up to three state-level finalists are forwarded to a national selection committee of mathematics educators, researchers, district officials, and past awardees who will meet to select national winners. The teachers chosen to be Presidential Awardees will be notified by the White House, honored at various ceremonies in Washington, D.C., and will receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Strougo and her fellow state-level finalists will be honored at the State Superintendent’s Excellence in Achievement Program in October. Dr. Strougo also will be honored by the Cherokee County School Board and Dr. Hightower at the board's Sept. 13 meeting.
