Tractor Trailer Buries Minivan in Cherokee Accident

The driver of the tractor trailer overturned on top of a minivan as he tried to make a right turn from Cumming Highway onto Union Hill Road.

Two people were injured in an accident when a tractor trailer tipped over onto a minivan just east of Canton late Thursday morning.

A tractor trailer hauling garbage was traveling eastbound on Highway 20/Cumming Highway and was attempting to make a right turn onto Union Hill Road when it overturned on top of a Honda minivan, said Georgia State Patrol spokesperson Franka Young.

The truck, which was “traveling too fast to make the turn,” covered the minivan, which was traveling northbound on Union Hill Road, Young stated.

“According to the driver his brakes failed as he approached the intersection,” Young added. “The Initial indication is that the left rear brakes locked as the tractor trailer entered the right turn lane.”

The driver of the tractor trailer, Ronnie Lee Crane, 46 of Carrollton and Canton resident Deanna Langston Cannon, 37, the driver of the minivan, were transported to Northside Hospital-Cherokee for treatment of minor injuries.

Along with the tractor trailer’s load spilling onto the highway, a diesel fuel spill also occurred near the intersection.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, which responded to the accident around 9:45 a.m., noted the Cherokee County Hazard Materials team was also called to assist with the fuel spill from the tractor trailer.

Highway 20 is now open, but Union Hill remains closed as workers continued to clean trash from the highway, Young added.

The accident remains under investigation.
