Volunteer Fire Department Transfers Station Ownership To County

Fire Station No. 32 at 3644 Sugar Pike Road is now under the control of Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services.

CANTON, GA — Representatives of the Hickory Flat Volunteer Fire Department Board of Trustees last week transferred ownership of Fire Station No. 32 at 3644 Sugar Pike Road to Cherokee County.

During the ceremony, members of the volunteer fire department board met with Fire Chief Tim Prather for the handover.

Due to recent changes brought on by organizational restructuring and growth within the community and the area, the Hickory Flat Volunteer Fire Department determined that in order for the property to continue to serve as a fire station, the transfer of ownership was necessary, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services said.

Larry Berry, a former chief who served the Hickory Flat Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years, said Station 32 was placed in service in July 1978. The first "duty guys" were hired after the county established its fire district tax and began serving the public in March 1999.

The building is scheduled to be upgraded and/or replaced in the coming years, but will remain a fire station serving the community and residents. On the day it ceases to do so, ownership of the property will revert to the heirs of the original deeded property owner with which the agreement was made.
