What's Open, Closed On Labor Day In Canton?

Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 5.

CANTON, GA -- If you're thinking about waiting until Monday to take care of any business you may have with your local government, then you may want to tweak that plan.

That's because the city of Canton, as well as the offices for the Cherokee County government, will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5 in observance of Labor Day.

Business in the city and the county will return to normal on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Residential garbage collection will also be delayed by one day in the city of Canton.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the holiday is the "creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers."

The New York legislature introduced the first state bill to recognize Labor Day, but Oregon was the first to actually pass a law recognizing the holiday in 1887.

Four more states -- Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York -- followed suit and by the end of the decade, Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania joined the list of states recognizing Labor Day.

Twenty-three other states adopted the holiday by 1894 and on June 28, Congress passed a law declaring the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.
