Woman Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting In Floyd County

The woman was fatally shot after she opened fire on officers who were trying to pull her over for speeding, the GBI said.

FLOYD COUNTY, GA — A Cedartown woman was shot and killed Monday afternoon after she allegedly opened fire on officers who tried to pull her over for speeding in a school zone in Floyd County, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

The Floyd County Police Department, Georgia State Patrol and Floyd County Sheriff's Office all requested the help of the GBI to investigate the officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of Kimberley R. McCann, 55.

According to preliminary information released by the GBI, McCann was driving "at a high rate of speed" through a school zone in Cave Spring, a small town about 16 miles southwest of Rome. Cave Spring police officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the GBI said McCann did not pull over. A police chase ensued, with Floyd sheriff's deputies, Floyd County police and Georgia state troopers joining in the pursuit to pull over the driver.

McCann eventually crashed her vehicle, striking multiple cars in the process. At that moment, she opened fire on officers and four of them returned fire, the state agency said. McCann died from her injuries, and no officers were injured in the shoot out.

The GBI has released the names of the law enforcement personnel who were involved in the shooting: Officers Leonard Whaley and Chris Shelley of the Floyd County Police Department; Trooper Jamie Mitchell of the Georgia State Patrol and Deputy Devin Womack of the Floyd County Sheriff's Office.

The GBI states it will continue its investigation and once it's complete, the case file will be turned over to the Floyd County Judicial Circuit for review. The Floyd County incident is the most recent shooting involving law enforcement around the state within the last two weeks. The most recent shooting occurred early Sunday when a man suspected of drunk driving was fatally shot by a College Park officer after he was pulled over at a gas station in East Point.

On April 28, a mentally-ill woman armed with a knife was shot and killed by Johns Creek police after her family called 9-1-1 to get help because she was having a mental breakdown. Both shootings remain under investigation by the GBI.
