The role of the BWFN is to increase the numbers of women of all cultures in the film industry and related areas. Deidre McDonald, BWFN Board Member said, β€œThese are some extraordinary women who are going to go on to make an impact on the industry.”

Scholarships are presented annually during the Black Women in Film Network Summit, a three-day cultural celebration of Black women in film and entertainment. To be considered, candidates had to complete an essay expressing why careers in film, screenwriting or related areas are important today. In addition, they were required to explain their future goals and objectives as they relate to the film and entertainment industry.
