Sunday marked 50 years to the day since a stack of dynamite was detonated outside a Birmingham, Ala., church.
The city is wrapping up a week-long memorial for the four young black girls killed in the blast. Β Itβs an event that shocked the world and transformed the landscape of the civil rights movement in the 1960s.
The bombing happened a little more than two weeks after the historic March on Washington. Β Hundreds of people gathered Sunday at the 16th Street Church where bells tolled at 10:22 a.m., exactly 50 years from the moment when the dynamite exploded.
