Adamsville Rec Welcomes Olympic, Paralympic Champion Swimmers

More than 100 Atlanta youths were coached by two international swimming champions.


More than 100 Atlanta youths got a chance to meet - and get some one-on-one coaching - from two world-champion swimmers on Monday at the .

British Olympic swimmer Gemma Spofforth and nine-time Paralympic medalist Curtis Lovejoy of Union City conducted a swimming clinic sponsored by the British Consul General of Atlanta, entitled 'Sport Is GREAT.'

Both have qualified for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. Spofforth is the current 100m backstroke world record holder, while Lovejoy - also a champion Paralympic fencer - first competed in the games in 2002.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed was also present.

The swimmers who participated in the clinic were from the Adamsville Recreation Center, a program in partnership with the Metro Atlanta YMCA and members of the Atlanta Dolphins Swim Team. The Atlanta Dolphins have broken down barriers for young African-Americans, including physically challenged swimmers.Β Β
