Washington Boys Move Into First Place, Westlake Girls Drop to Second

Mays squads and Westlake boys still in the thick of region standings

Another week of high school hoops is in the books and as the season draws to a close, teams are raising their level of intensity in preparation for their region tournaments and pending state playoffs.

It was a week of transition at Washington as the Bulldogs moved up to the penthouse in Region 5A-AAA. Washington took over first place this past week after defeating North Springs and North Atlanta. The Bulldogs are 12-7 overall and 5-2 in league play.

“We are in the toughest region in the state. It’s up and down every night,” said boys’ head coach William Faulkner. “Everyone in our region on both sides plays hard. There’s excellent coaching in our region and you have to bring your A game every night.”

Westlake’s girls played four games this past week and finished at 3-1. The Lady Lions beat M.L. King, Newton and Luella, but fell at home versus Stephenson, snapping a seven game winning streak. Westlake showcases a 15-4 mark and as a result of its loss to Stephenson, the Lady Lions are now in second place in the region standings, one game behind the Lady Jaguars at 9-1 in 2-AAAAA.

Over at Mays, both the girls and boys are in third place in Region 6B-AAAA.

The girls appear to be pushing all the right buttons, compiling a seven game winning streak and have yet to lose in 2011. Mays beat Tucker, Lithonia and Douglass to improve to 10-5 with an 8-2 record in league play.

“We’re peaking at the right time,” said Mays girls’ head coach Natasha Harrigan. “We’re in a tough region, so we’re just trying to work on our execution and focus on the little things. Hard work pays off and we have to keep working.”

Mays’ boys have won nine of 10 and stand at 12-7. The Raiders were tripped up by Tucker on Jan. 25, 50-47, but rebounded with wins over Lithonia and Douglass to post an 8-2 mark in 6B-AAAA.

Other third-place clubs include Washington’s girls and the Westlake boys.

Washington’s overall record is 8-11, but the Lady Bulldogs are 5-2 in Region 5A-AAA, just a half game behind first-place St. Pius X.

The Westlake Lions is 10-6 and 6-5 in 2-AAAAA.

Unfortunately, there were no changes at Therrell as both squads remain under .500 and in fourth place in 6B-AA.
