Here are the top three stories today in and around Cumming:

  1. In memory of the 9/11 terrorist attacks 21 years ago, there will be a stadium climb at West Forsyth High School from 8:30-9:30 a.m. to honor fallen heroes. Tickets are required for the event and check-in begins at 8 a.m. Participants will climb 110 stories and receive the name tag of a fallen hero. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Forsyth County B.A.D.G.E fund (911 Climb).
  2. Interested in becoming a mentor for today's youth? Well, Forsyth County Schools is in need of mentors and will train those that are interested. The next session is Tuesday Sept. 13 from 6-8 p.m. at Academies of Creative Education, 1160 Dahlonega Hwy. Studies have shown that mentoring can help young people change direction and do better academically and socially. Becoming a mentor involves committing 30 minutes per week during school hours with a student for the school year and hopefully the following year. (Forsyth County Schools)
  3. Georgia Gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams will be coming to Forsyth County Sunday, Sept. 18 as part of a campaign event for Democratic candidates in Georgia's 6th Congressional District. Candidates and party leaders will hold an open forum starting at 2 p.m. at the FoCAL Arts Center. A Dinner for Democracy following the event will benefit the Forsyth County Democratic Committee. Abrams is facing Republican incumbent Gov. Brian Kemp in the November election. (Forsyth County News)

  • Forsyth County Public Library is looking for teenagers interested in serving on a Teen Advisory Board (TAB). TAB is for teens in grades 6-12 that help plan and promote teen programs in the county's libraries. It's designed to help students gain leadership experience, help the community and meet new people.   • If you need help, get it! A new mental health hotline is now active. You can now call or text 988 to reach the Suicide Prevention Hotline and get the care you need 24/7. You can also visit 988lifeline.org/chat to chat with a caring counselor. This shortcut is not replacing the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255), but will serve as an easy alternative for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis.
