Affordable Care Act Plans: Look Beyond the Premium!

The Affordable Care Act (PPACA) has requirements for Essential Health Benefits and that the policies must cover a certain “actuarial value” to be compliant with the law.  I have read numerous articles about premiums under PPACA being either lower or higher than anticipated.  The “politicking” is intense.

Brushing all this aside, under PPACA, it is even more important for each individual to enroll in the best fitting plan for your needs and there are some landmines.  Some changes I am already seeing with some plans:

·Tighter physician/provider networks that could result in major costs should you not get your care “in network”.  Lesson: check the physician network.

·Some benefit designs with less physician copays that would require you to pay for the full office visit until you hit your deductible and out of pocket maximum.

·Drug formulary pre-authorizations will increase

I am not saying some of these new plan designs will or won’t meet your needs and I am not trying to inject fear.  I am recommending everyone be thorough and “look beyond the premium” reviewing the total plan, Assess how much it will cost you personally for your healthcare (not just a fictitious average person).  This is particularly true when shopping online.
