Ants Seek Refuge Indoors

Ants are a year round pest in Georgia as well as other parts of the country, but as the weather cools off and rain comes in, they can seek refuge indoors- in your home. The two most popular species are Argentine ants and carpenter ants.

Argentine Ants

- Light brown to dark brown in color, shiny

- Grow to about 1/16-1/4” in length

- Create pheromone trails to leads other ants to food sources

- Like sugary things and other foods in our homes

- Nest in mulch (especially pine straw), leaf litter, compost piles, rotted logs, and under rocks, patio stones and potted plants

- Move to structures at the onset of cooler weather and can build nests which contain thousands of ants

Carpenter Ants

- Black bodies with reddish legs

- About 5/8” in length

- Build colonies in wood, but don’t feed on it; prefer sugary foods, insects, plants and meat fats
