The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Cumming.

Good morning, everybody. It's Wednesday in Cumming and I'm back in your inbox to get you caught up on all the most important things happening in town. Let's do this...

First, today's weather:

Humid; a stray p.m. t-storm. High: 94 Low: 75.

Here are the top five stories in Cumming today:

  1. Florida State left-handed pitcher, Wyatt Crowell, a Cumming native, has been named to the 2022 Collegiate National Team. Crowell had 72 strikeouts in 51 innings, allowing only 17 walks in 28 appearances on the mound. He will join the 26-man team and represent Team USA at Honkbalweek Haarlem in the Netherlands from Jul. 8-15. (The Osceola)
  2. The City of Cumming held its annual Independence Day celebration on Jul. 4 despite the poor weather forecast. The 65th Annual Thomas-Mashburn Steam Engine Parade began downtown at 10:00 a.m. and ended at the Cumming Fairgrounds where festivities continued with bounce houses, live music, and more. The weather turned out to be a hot, sunny summer's day that concluded with fireworks. (Appen Media)
  3. State Rep. Lauren McDonald (R-Cumming) was appointed to the Joint Georgia Music Heritage Study Committee. Established in 2022, the joint committee will focus on the economic impact of Georgia's music industry and ways to expand and promote it. The joint committee will also explore legislative solutions to support the state's music tourism sector as well. (Valdosta Daily Times)
  4. Forsyth County Fire Department responded to reports of a boat fire at Mary Alice Park on Lake Lanier on Monday afternoon. A solo boater was able to escape the sport boat without injury after trying to turn it on and it burst into flames. A preliminary investigation shows the cause of the fire may be that the boat was fueled but not properly vented. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  5. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office invited Stephens County deputies to their range to show how they train their deputies. The training focused on team movement of deputies while working with a K9 team outdoors to safely track missing or fleeing individuals. The agencies worked together to share training information.
