- 3/4 cup heavy cream
- 8 oz. semisweet chocolate, or a mixture of 4 ounces semisweet and 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- Optional: 3 to 4 tablespoons liqueur, such as chocolate (Godiva), hazelnut (Frangelico), almond (amaretto), orange (Grand Marnier), or coffee (Kahlúa)
Place the cream in a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low, add chocolate, and whisk until smooth. Remove from heat and whisk in the butter until smooth. Whisk in the liqueur (if desired) until smooth.
Transfer to a fondue pot and serve with fabulous goodies, such as:

- cubes of pound cake
- dried apricots
- marshmallows
- strawberries
- pear or apple slices
- pineapple
- pretzels
- biscotti or cookies
