Cumming Girl Scout Troop Takes a Bite Out of the Big Apple
Experiencing Central Park, Ellis Island, the Cake Boss and even Neville Longbottom, the group returned home to Cumming after a six-day whirlwind trip, tired but happy to have gone.
Cumming's local Girl Scout Troop 13816 returned from a six-day trip to New York City where they took a huge bite out of the Big Apple. Troop Leader Melissa Loggins said that the group consisted of ten people: five Ambassador scouts—Forsyth County high school juniors and seniors—and five chaperones. Loggins laughed as she explained that because of the destination, parents wanted to go, too.
The group had originally planned to see Europe, but due to significant costs, New York City became the final location. Funding was provided through fund raisers and cookie sales.
Loggins said the trip was a lot of fun. “I enjoyed taking kids to new places because it’s always new when I’m seeing it through their eyes,” said the troop leader who has visited Manhattan numerous times.

During their stay, the travelers visited many of the typical tourist attractions such as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Natural History, Central Park, and two Broadway musicals (Sister Act and The Phantom of the Opera).
Lindsey Poe said her favorite part of the trip was shopping in Time Square. “Shopping with your girlfriends is always fun, but it’s even better in New York,” explained the 16 year old Forsyth Central student. Part of the shopping expedition included time at the seven-floor forever 21 store. Souvenirs included jewelry and t-shirts.

Some of the not-so-typical stops included Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, New Jersey, where The Cake Boss is filmed. Because the show was being filmed, the girls were not allowed to enter. However, Buddy Valastro, aka the Cake Boss, did wave to the group through the window.
Another attraction was The Harry Potter Exhibit at the Discovery Museum where the group was able to watch Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) being interviewed for DVD Extras for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
“He’s so much different. He’s really cool,” said Poe. “Neville is the nerdy wizard,” she went on to explain.
Native Georgia Jessica Cochran said that New York City was “too busy. There were so many people. I liked it, but six days was enough.”
“It was a great experience for a country girl like me,” remarked the 17-year-old senior at North Forsyth High.
