Here are the top five stories in Cumming today:
- Ascension Mixed Martial Arts will host a special class to help raise money for training members of law enforcement how to practice jiu-jitsu. Professor Greg Lapin is raising money for Adopt a Cop BJJ, a non-profit organization that provides scholarships for law enforcement officers to learn jiu-jitsu. The program is open to all experience levels, and all proceeds will go toward Adopt a Cop. The event will take place Saturday, August 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the dojo, 2 Tri-County Plaza in Cumming. The cost is $50. Donations can be made in person, on the day of the training, or to Lapin via Venmo (@Greg-Lapin) with "Ascension" and the trainee's name as the note. (Forsyth County News)
- A ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil newly added amenities at Eagle's Beak Park will be held Tuesday, August 16 at 3 p.m. The park, located at 8420 Old Federal Rd in Ball Ground, will have an inclusive playground, a 1.25-mile paved walking trail with Trail of Tears historical signage, and scenic river overlooks and picnic pavilions. The additions were made possible through a $2.25 million Georgia Department of Natural Resources grant.
- An Alpharetta mother has spoken out to warn parents and caregivers about the possibilities and dangers of toddlers climbing into hot cars. The mother of three is using her own family's experience with this situation to raise awareness and to educate. She notes that although it's rare, more instances of toddlers climbing into empty hot cars does happen. She highlights her work with Kids and Car Safety to bring awareness to the community. - Registration is now open for the 2022 Northside Hospital Paint Gwinnett Pink 5K Walk/Run for Breast Cancer. The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7 a.m. at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. Now in its seventh year, Paint Gwinnett Pink is held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and supports breast cancer programs at Northside Hospital Gwinnett and Northside Hospital Duluth. Money raised provides improved access to cutting-edge imaging technology for earlier diagnosis, mammograms and transportation and other assistance needed for cancer treatments. The 2022 event theme of "Seeing Beyond" was chosen to celebrate and highlight the fundraising goal to secure new 3D mammography technology at the two hospitals (Northside Hospital).

- Forsyth County Public Library is looking for teenagers interested in serving on a Teen Advisory Board (TAB). TAB is for teens in grades 6-12 that help plan and promote teen programs in the county's libraries. It's designed to help students gain leadership experience, help the community, and meet new people.
