Domestic Violence: the problem and the solution

The National Council Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) recently defined domestic violence as “a pervasive problem in virtually all countries, cultures, classes and income groups”. Domestic violence does not discriminate against race, creed, marital status, socioeconomic status, gender, or age. As such it is a multi-faceted problem with solutions that are as unique as the individual victim.

Two startling facts from NCADV:

One in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.

Appropriate solutions are available and Forsyth County Family Haven offers both short-term and long-term measures. During the critical period after a woman leaves the relationship, Family Haven provides food, shelter and guidance. There are support groups, case managers, and a legal advocate. Support during this time is critical because it is during this period when she is most at-risk for retribution from the perpetrator. She is also most likely to return to a dangerous situation due to feelings of hopelessness. Long-term solutions include support of her efforts to re-build her life and that of her children. It also includes community awareness and education.

Together with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Cumming Police Department, the Forsyth County court system, and the community at large, Forsyth County Family Haven can continue its efforts to work toward a community free of domestic violence.

Family Haven is committed to collaborate with these organizations to provide superior services for our residents and to advocate for victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
