Farmer’s Market Vickery Style

A new farmer's market launched this week at Vickery Village. Here is what you need to know.

In years past, when visiting a farmer’s market, all you could expect were a few farmers selling that week’s crop out of the back of their trucks. It was always the freshest and best tasting vegetables, but you had to get up early, and there was a limit to what you could find. A lot has changed since then. It is still the place for the freshest food with that taste you only get from local growers, but the selection no longer stops with watermelon and corn.

This past Friday, Vickery Village launched its very own farmer’s market. It is a mini version of the one that can be found on Saturday mornings in Alpharetta, and I have hope that it will quickly expand to match their variety. All of the vendors are from Georgia, and most are from this area. In addition to the farm, Southern Growers, you also have people selling honey, fresh made breads, loose leaf tea, locally made cheese, fantastic granola, sauces of various kinds, jelly, seafood, and  even a couple of booths selling handmade products. Since it was my first trip, and I ‘m by no means a market pro, my first haul was conservative, but I am greatly looking forward to next week.

A couple of things to keep in mind if you go:

1. Bring cash. I am so used to just swiping my card that I sometimes forget to carry cash. Thankfully, there are 2 banks close by with ATMs if you forget.

2. Parking is not easy. The market takes up the front lot, and I felt bad about taking up one of the spots for the shops. I found a great spot behind Tanners, and it really isn’t too much of a walk to park at the YMCA

3. The hours are not traditional for a market. Usually markets run at “way too early” on Saturdays, but since some of the vendors will also be found at Alpharetta then, this market runs Fridays from 11 to 3. That makes it just right for a lunch hour run.

4. Take a basket or shopping bag. Each of the booths had sacks, but after a couple of stops it gets hard to juggle money and bags and still not feel rushed. If you have one big sack you can combine it in, it will make multiple purchases easier to carry.

5. Tell your friends. Experiments like this only work if they get business. You can get their updates through their Facebook page.
