🌱 Fire Destroys South Forsyth Home + Coach, Community Leader Dies
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Cumming.
Good morning, neighbors. It's me, Phil Giltman, your host of the Cumming Daily — here to explain all the most important things happening in the community today. Let's do it.
Fun fact: July 27 is National Crème Brûlée Day!
First, today's weather:
A shower and t-storm; humid. High: 85 Low: 72.
Here are the top three stories today in Cumming:
- Philip Michael Broome, a family man, community leader, football and soccer coach, public speaker, and motivator, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 49 on July 19. Raised in Houston, TX, Philip was a star athlete in soccer and football at Eisenhower High School. He also starred in various high school and college theater productions. After graduating from Rivier University in Nashua, NH, Philip relocated to Alpharetta. In 1999, while both working for the YMCA, a mutual friend introduced Philip to his wife life, Linda Spence, and in 2002, they were married. Philip coached boys and girls soccer and football at Milton High School and also served as a paraprofessional supporting students with special needs. Philip is survived by his wife and three children, Hunter (18), Hayden (17) and Hailey (13). A celebration of life will take place today at 2 p.m. at Roswell United Methodist Church, 814 Mimosa Blvd, Roswell. (Legacy)
- A Cumming man was arrested for allegedly stalking his ex-wife, burglarizing and causing thousands of dollars in damage to her home. Forsyth County deputies responded to a home on Clayburn Road at about 3 a.m. on July 16, and were informed that a woman's ex-boyfriend had attempted to break in. Police found that three windows and a door had been damaged and a suspect could be seen on camera from a Ring doorbell attempting to break into the home. Propane tanks had been taken from the home, and the home's phone and internet cables had allegedly been cut. Police found the suspect's vehicle parked at Tidwell Park and discovered a stolen propane tank in the bed of the truck. The suspect was arrested for stalking, theft, and felony criminal damage to property. (Appen Media)
- A house fire Saturday afternoon on Brook Pond Court in south Forsyth County left three pets dead, a firefighter injured and a family displaced. Authorities are deeming the home "likely a total loss." No civilians were injured, but two firefighters required medical attention on the scene after one fell from the second floor to the first and the other was treated for exhaustion and dehydration. Seven engine companies, a ladder truck company, two ambulances, two battalion chiefs and surround support units responded to the scene. Forsyth County also received assistance from Johns Creek Fire Department as well as Alpharetta and Gwinnett County. The origin of the fire is still under investigation and reports show that no one was home when the fire began (Forsyth County News).
