Here are the top stories today in Cumming:

  1. North Point Mall is slated to get a makeover. A $500 million makeover that is. Originally opened in 1993, the mall has struggled in recent years, especially with the opening of Avalon and Halcyon. Plans for the 83-acre property include demolishing 464,000 square feet of the mall and creating an "outdoor-centric" village environment with retail space, restaurants, offices, green space, townhomes and apartments. The Alpharetta Planning Commission has already approved the project, but it still needs a vote from Alpharetta City Council, which has a public hearing with the developer set for Nov. 7. According to officials, if the project is not approved, the entire mall property would most likely have to be shut down. (WSB)
  2. Forsyth County Board of Commissioners denied a request by the City of Cumming to rezone 43 acres of county-owned property for construction of a mixed-use development. The Forsyth County Development Authority and Atlanta-based Inline Communities proposed a 20,000 square foot mixed-use development on Veterans Memorial Boulevard with over 400 units of mixed residential housing. The BOC voted unanimously to deny the request, citing that the proposal runs counter to the county's original land-use plan. (Appen Media)
  3. South Forsyth High School was crowned Region 6-7A softball champions after defeating Denmark 7-3 Thursday. The War Eagles, finishing undefeated in the region and 21-6 overall, earned a No. 1 seed for the Class 7A state playoffs. (Subscription: Forsyth County News)
