Today's weather:

Here are the top three stories in and around Cumming today:

  1. Former Atlanta Braves pitcher Anthony Varvaro, who hung up his cleats to become a Port Authority Police Officer, was killed by a wrong-way driver while on his way to a 9/11 memorial ceremony. Varvaro, 37, had an assignment at Manhattan's World Trade Center 9/11 ceremony when the crash occurred. He played for the Braves, Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners. He is survived by his wife and four children. (CNN)
  2. Ever want to learn about the various religions practiced in the Appalachian Mountains and the history behind them? Well, now you can. University of North Georgia professor Dr. Barry Whittemore will be at Sharon Forks Library today from 7-8 p.m. explaining how religion has shaped the region's culture. (Forsyth County Library)
  3. Interested in becoming a mentor for today's youth? Well, Forsyth County Schools is in need of mentors and will train those that are interested. The next session is today from 6-8 p.m. at Academies of Creative Education, 1160 Dahlonega Hwy. Studies have shown that mentoring can help young people change direction and do better academically and socially. Becoming a mentor involves committing 30 minutes per week during school hours with a student for the school year and hopefully the following year. (Forsyth County Schools)

About me: I've lived in Cumming since 2010. I'm married with two kids, both in Forsyth County Schools. I consider myself a jack of all trades. I love solid news reporting, scoring baseball games, playing golf, watching movies, reading books, doing crossword puzzles, listening to music, competing in fantasy leagues, commissioning said fantasy leagues, playing poker, trying new foods, traveling, and hanging with friends and family. I appreciate you stopping by.
