GDOT Uses New Web site, Social Media for Weather Updates
The Georgia Transportation Board is using a new Web site and Facebook and Twitter, as well as the old standards of radio and television, to give future updates on inclement weather and road conditions.

Residents in Georgia are now able to get updates of inclement weather and road conditions from the Georgia Department of Transportation via Facebook, Twitter and a newly designed Web site.
A preview of the new inclement weather section of the department’s Web site was a highlight at this month's meeting of the Georgia Transportation Board. The page went live late last week.
In addition to the new Web page, social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter will be used to distribute information in the event of severe weather. These communication tools will be manned by staff from GDOT for who might find it easier to follow weather alerts and updates through social media. Officials said these new outlets will be in addition to the traditional means of radio, television, newspapers and online media.

“The new Web page is a great way to let the public immediately see updates on road conditions,” said GDOT chairman Rudy Bowen. “I am excited to see the department expanding its reach to different markets by increasing the use of social media."
