Through all the problems with health reform, there is a group of people that could benefit significantly. Those of you that have been previously declined for pre-existing conditions and/or have very high out of pocket medical costs could benefit greatly from gold and platinum level health plans. Individuals managing chronic conditions often fit this category. These plans are guaranteed issue effective 1/1/2014. While the premiums are high, the cost sharing is much lower (deductibles, copays). All told, you may find your total medical expenditures are more predictable and even lower.
The best way to see if these make sense is to add your total expenses (premium and out of pocket) for 2013 and compare them to Gold and Platinum 2014 plans. Also look at health savings account qualified plans. Have your health insurance agent take you through the analysis and make an objective business decision.
These plans are PPACA qualified health plans and can also be obtained "off exchange" without having to use healthcare.gov if you do not qualify for a subsidy. Remember, if you do qualify for a subsidy, you must use the exchanges for 2014 plans.
