🌱 Lambert Kicks Off Softball Season + Cumming Golfer Wins Open

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Cumming.

Hey, friends! I'm back with a new copy of the Cumming Daily fresh off the press. I'd like to personally wish all parents, teachers, students, faculty and staff a great first day of school!

Today's Dad Joke: Why do fathers take an extra pair of socks when they go golfing? In case they get a hole in one.

Today's weather:

Humid; an afternoon t-storm. High: 91 Low: 71.

Here are the top three stories today in Cumming:

  1. Lambert High School softball kicked off its 2022 campaign with a home game against Parkview last night. Entering his ninth season as head coach, Brooks Youngblood led the Longhorns to the Elite 8 last year with a 29-6 record. Lambert swept past Mountain View and Parkview in the opening two rounds of the playoffs before finishing 1-2 in the Class 7A double-elimination tournament. Hannah Cole is back after a dominant sophomore season, and two-way senior standout Courtney Sauer could very well be the favorite for Region 6-7A player of the year.
  2. A man allegedly attempting to steal 10 cartons of cigarettes and assaulting a Publix employee on Mathis Airport Road has been arrested. David Luther Johnson, 49, of Lithonia, was arrested Saturday and is charged with felony strong-arm robbery of a business, felony aggravated battery and giving a false name, address or birthdate to law enforcement, according to the Forsyth County Sherriff's Office. Johnson is being held on $23,160 bond at the Fayetteville Police Department (Forsyth County News).
  3. Cumming golfer Ji Eun Baik won the 28th Georgia Women's Open at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens. Baik, 27, who also won the Open in 2018, finished two shots ahead of amateur Nataliya Guseva of Coral Gables, Fla. Guseva plays at the University of Miami. (The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
