Here are the top stories today in Cumming:

  1. Midway Elementary School is getting a new home. On Oct. 18, officials broke ground on the new elementary school off Mullinax Road next to Denmark High School. Midway Elementary on Ga. 9 was built 61 years ago in 1961 with capacity for 700 students. Forsyth County Schools Superintendent Jeff Bearden said the school has long since outgrown that capacity, and the new building will nearly double the capacity, providing a modern education space for generations. Construction is expected to be completed in 2024 and will open to students that fall. (Appen Media)
  2. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held this Friday at 10:30 a.m. for new Fire Station 9 to be located in the Lake Lanier area of east Forsyth County, 8420 McBride Lane. Slated to open in spring 2024, Fire Station 9 will be a 12,500-square-foot, four-bay station. Construction of the new station is funded by the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) as well as Impact Fees. The cost of the project is approximately $6.7 million. (Forsyth County Government)
  3. The Forsyth County Board Of Commissioners proclaimed Oct. 23-29 as Family Promise Week in Forsyth County. Family Promise of Forsyth County, Inc. is an organization that works to help children and families currently experiencing homelessness in the County. Nearly 700 students are currently identified as homeless in the Forsyth County School system. The BOC recognizes Family Promise's work and encourages residents to spread awareness on the issue of homelessness in the County. (Press Release Desk)
