New Year, New Attitude?

Have you ever considered that ordinary days are actually full of potential? It may seem a bit trite, but doing something new to change old habits is a healthy alternative to staying stuck in a rut.  Since old habits die hard, and it’s already March, how can you find more joy in small ways? Begin with appreciating what you already have and where you are. The little things matter. Instead of living each day, try living each hour and being in the moment.

Less can be more. Things don’t need to be complicated to be valuable. Making small changes in your attitude can create a better overall outlook on life. You can be more observant and make an effort to appreciate the everyday things you normally take for granted. Above all else, try to be kind and to model to others the behavior you would like to receive yourself. It's the Golden Rule.

Notice the little things, like the sunrise, budding trees, sprouting daffodils, the blue sky, or even the sound of falling rain. Just finding a parking space or getting a green light when you need one can lift your spirits if you take a moment to appreciate these little things. The smell of supper cooking on the stove, the smile of a child, the sound of laughter, or the wagging tail of a puppy, even a cup of coffee or a smile from a stranger can add up to a better feeling about yourself.

To be more generous and kind toward others is rewarding and costs you nothing. Tell friends that you appreciate them or that they look nice today, or that it was great to spend time with them. Hold the door open for a mom with a stroller, help a handicapped person unload groceries at the check-out counter, or just let someone cut into gridlock traffic. This may all sound like a sermon from Little Mary Sunshine, but small deeds can reap big rewards. Give it a try!
