An Old Fashioned Hay Day Raises Funds For Horse Rescue
Save the Horses Annual Hay Day Hopes to Offset a Portion of a $34,000 Annual Hay Expense.
CUMMING, Georgia (October 13, 2015) - Save the Horses’ Annual Hay fundraising drive takes place on Saturday, October 17 from 11a to 4p. (Rain date: October 24.) Its the farm’s biggest event of the year where it hopes to raise enough funds to buy hay to feed 100 rescued horses and other animals throughout the winter.
The Hay Day fundraiser is a fun Fall event for the entire family at the Save the Horses farm on 1768 Newt Green Road in Cumming. It features a good old fashioned farm day with activities such as hay rides, cake walk, pony rides, homemade baked goods, food, music, vendors and raffle prizes. Couple that with face painting, games, a chili cook-off and all the charms of visiting the rescued horses and petting zoo animals (pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, turkey, ducks, miniature horses, etc.) 100% of proceeds from the event will go towards the purchase of bales of hay for the over 100 horses and other animals in their care.
Hay is an Enormous Expense for the Rescue
Horses need winter hay to thrive during the months when grass is not available. Good quality hay costs about $12 a bale or more. Bales weigh about 50-60 pounds. A horse eats about 20 pounds a day so a single bale last 2-3 days for each horse. Save the Horses is home to nearly 100 horses! That’s an annual expense of around $34,000, which needs to be raised via donations from generous supporters as the all-volunteer run rescue does not receive any state or federal funding to operate.
“Hay Day is important for us to raise the money to buy hay and continue helping horses. With the economic instability over the past few years, donations have slowed down but the amount of horses needing help has increased tremendously. We are heartbroken to turn a needy horse down. We do everything we can to help any horse, whether someone needs temporary help with hay and grain, loses their property or job and can’t financially keep their horse, or has a race horse that is not winning, they all need help. Even animal controls from several counties, even other states, have asked for our help. They depend on us to take horses so they are not forced to euthanize them because of budget cuts.” Says Cheryl Flanagan, the Rescue’s Director
