Since we are now in December, the expected trends for next year are starting to be released and one of the most anticipated is the Outdoor Living Area trends for 2014. The backyard can be a place to spend time with family and friends, entertain, or simply serve as a respite from the day to day grind. With many families still feeling the sting of the economy, investing in their home makes more sense than an extravagant vacation – especially if they can create a resort style feeling in their own backyard. The “staycation” has become increasingly popular, so families want to be able to enjoy the time at their homes.
According to the Industry Edge, here are a few trends we can expect for Outdoor Living Areas in 2014:
1) Many shades of colors. As the economy has slowly improved, people are feeling happier and are incorporating bright and cheerful colors into their outdoor décor. Look for geometric patterns to become more popular than the standby floral and tropical style.

2) Food-gardening blooms in popularity. The National Gardening Association’s annual survey found that last year the national food-gardening spending was $1.2 billion larger than the money spent on national flower-gardening. The television chefs have encouraged people to embrace the “farm to table” philosophy and grow their own produce.
3) Fire up the grill. Again, the popularity of cooking shows has people wanting to try new things on the grill. With online recipes available for just about anything, the backyard chefs are becoming more and more creative.
