🌱 Overdose Awareness Day + Cornhole League Registration

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Cumming.

Hello and happy Sunday! I'm back in your inbox this summer morning with all the most important things happening in and around Cumming these days. Without further ado...

Fun fact: August 21 is National Senior Citizens Day!

Today's weather:

Humid with a heavy t-storm. High: 82 Low: 70.

Here are the top three stories in Cumming today:

  1. Individual high schools will have the choice to reinstate seven of the eight books Forsyth County Schools removed from libraries in January due to sexual content. Teachers, media specialists, students and parents will volunteer to read two books each and provide feedback to the District Media Committee, which will make the decision based on the quality of content in the book, the manner of presentation, the level of user appeal and interest, whether the book is appropriate for middle and/or high school, whether the book supported the implementation of state standards, and whether the book supports the goals of FCS as identified in the district's strategic plan. The book that wasn't approved is All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson, a memoir about growing up as a homosexual African-American man in the U.S. (Forsyth County News)
  2. August 31 has been proclaimed Overdose Awareness Day by Forsyth County Commissioners. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, all drug overdose deaths in Georgia increased by 55.9% from 2019 to 2021. Fentanyl-related overdose deaths increased in Georgia by 106.2% between May 1, 2020 and April 30, 2021. The board is urging all residents to learn more about prescription drug overdose prevention as well as how to aid and support those affected by it. The Forsyth County government buildings will join buildings and landmarks across the nation in lighting up purple in recognition of Overdose Awareness Day. (Forsyth County Government)
  3. Calling all Cornhole players! Today is the last day to register for the 8-week Fall Cornhole League at The Dahlonega Brewery. League play is on Thursday nights starting August 25 through October 13 from 6-8 p.m. There are three divisions based on skill lever: Ringers (Competitive), Slingers (Intermediate) and Dingers (Novice). It's $60 per player with the top teams qualifying for an end-of-season city tournament. Dahlonega Brewery is located at 3003 Morrison Moore Parkway. (Patch)
