Here are the top stories today in and around Cumming:

  1. A Coal Mountain Elementary School bus was delayed Monday afternoon when a parent allegedly stepped onto the bus and refused to exit. The mother demanded the driver let her children off at a location other than the assigned stop. The incident occurred in the Bridgetowne subdivision off Browns Bridge Road. Bus drivers are prohibited from allowing students to get off the bus at any stop other than the one assigned. Adults, parents or guardians are also prohibited from going onto a school bus. When the parent continued to refuse to get off the bus, staff members contacted dispatch. A transportation supervisor and Forsyth County Sheriff's Office deputy were called to the scene and eventually able to get the mother off the bus. Officials sent a notification to the parents explaining the delay, which was about 10-15 minutes. (Forsyth County News)
  2. The following employees celebrated their 20 years of service milestone for the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office: Sergeant Jeff Roe and Karleen Chalker. DFC Terry Hamrick, Corporal Diedre Lotspeich, Lieutenant Andrew Chilton, Lieutenant Derek Bleisath, Master Deputy Sam Boone and Master Deputy Mike Skibba. (Forsyth County Sheriff's Office)
  3. The Atlanta Braves have signed hometown rookie outfielder Michael Harris II to an 8-year, $72 million contract extension. The deal runs through the 2030 season and includes a $15 million club option for 2031 and $20 million club option for 2032. The deal will be worth $102 million over 10 years if both options are exercised. Nicknamed Money Mike, Harris grew up in DeKalb and Henry counties and attended Stockbridge High School. He was drafted out of high school with the 98th pick in the 2019 MLB draft. (WSB)
  4. The 31st annual Corky Kell Classic, Georgia's official kickoff to high school football season, kicked off Wednesday. There will be 22 teams from across the state participating in 11 games over the next several days. North Atlanta plays North Forsyth at 5:30 p.m. and West Forsyth squares off against Archer at 8:30 p.m. today. Both games are at West Forsyth High School. (Subscribe: Atlanta Journal Constitution)
