Second Officer Hit By DUI Driver In Forsyth: Police (ICYMI)

The police officer was driving home Friday night when he was hit, hours before a sheriff's deputy was struck while on patrol.

CUMMING, GA — A second law-enforcement officer was reportedly struck by a drunk driver over the weekend in Forsyth County.

Dustin Bak, an officer with the Alpharetta Police Department, was driving home Friday night on Ga. 400 when he was struck from behind by another driver, according to the department. Both vehicles were heavily damaged and Joesph Gipe was arrested by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and charged with DUI.

That crash happened just hours before another alcohol-related crash on Ga. 400 that injured a Forsyth sheriff's deputy, authorities say.

Deputy First Class Rod Reeves was sitting in the patrol vehicle on the shoulder near Majors Road working traffic enforcement early Saturday when a 2005 Ford Explorer struck the back of his car, said sheriff's office spokesperson Deputy Doug Rainwater.

The driver of the Explorer has been identified as Aaron Riley Russell, 27, who is suspected of being under the influence at the time of the crash, the sheriff's office said. Russell also was driving on a revoked Georgia's drivers license and was considered a habitual violator. He was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Gipe was bonded out of Forsyth County Jail early Saturday on a $5,800 cash bond.

On Facebook, the Alpharetta Police Department used the crash as a reminder of the dangers of drunk driving.

"Please be aware that if you choose to put yourself and others at risk by drinking and driving, you are subjecting yourself to being arrested as well as possibly injuring, or killing others," the post said.
