Here are the top three stories today in and around Cumming:
- September is National Suicide Prevention Month and Forsyth County Schools is encouraging secondary staff and students to wear yellow Friday, Sept. 9 to help promote awareness. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 10-14 and third leading cause of death among people aged 15-24. It's the 12th leading cause of death in the US overall. If you need help or know someone who needs help, get it. Call or text 988 immediately. (Forsyth County Schools/NAMI)
- Flu season is nigh. The Forsyth County Health Department will hold a drive-thru flu shot clinic on Tuesday Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Fowler Park, 4110 Carolene Way. CDC recommends that everyone six months or older get the shot. (Public Health District 2)
- A paraprofessional at a local special needs education program was arrested Tuesday after an alleged altercation with a student. Felicita Herrington of Cumming was charged with second-degree cruelty to children at the FUTURES Program's Forsyth Center located at 136 Elm Street, according to Forsyth County Jail records. Herrington, 56, was arrested after reportedly striking a student in the face in front of other students. Harrington was arrested at the school and is being held on $11,130 bond. A Forsyth County Schools spokeswoman said the FUTURES Program uses a Forsyth County Schools building but is not part of the school district. (Forsyth County News Online)

This shortcut is not replacing the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255), but will serve as an easy alternative for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis.
