The Norwegian Amethyst Tiara Necklace

The Norwegian Amethyst Tiara is special in several ways.  Most notably, the tiara converts into a necklace.  Also, not many amethyst tiaras exist in royal collections.  This tiara is also relatively new, in comparison to most royal jewelry.  The tiara was created in the 90's and gifted to Queen Sonja by her husband, King Harald.  Queen Sonja is quickly becoming one of the most popular women in our Tiara Tuesday blog...

The piece is made of five large oval amethysts, each surrounded by diamonds, with a dainty flower of diamonds in between each one; above that is eleven pear-shaped amethysts, each surrounded by diamonds, staggered in height. It is actually part of a parure that includes earrings with removable drops, two bracelets that can be converted to be worn as a second simpler necklace, as well as a brooch that can also be worn as a pendant on the simpler necklace. It is one of the most versatile parures we have seen so far.

The piece is now in the collection of Queen Sonja's daughter-in-law, Princess Mette-Merit.  There are no photos of her wearing the tiara as a necklace, but in the photo below you can see she is wearing one of the bracelets that can be converted into the simpler necklace.

In 2010 Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, the only daughter of King Harald & Queen Sonja, borrowed the tiara to wear to the Swedish Royal wedding.  It is nice to include these photos because she looked absolutely amazing...

Happy Tiara Tuesday!
