Here are the top four stories today in Cumming:

  1. Two brothers were arrested on assault charges after a recent altercation at a construction site. According to Cumming Police Department and Forsyth County Jail, brothers Nahum Francisco Valera Avila, 33, and Elvin Edgardo Valera Avila, 25, were arrested July 27 and charged with felony aggravated assault with a knife or cutting instrument. The incident occurred at an apartment construction site on Meadow Drive. Both are being held on a $16,520 bond. Elvin is also being held for Immigration and Customs Enforcement violations.   2. The Rock for Rescues Benefit Concert returns to the The Green at Crabapple Market for an evening of music benefiting animal rescue non-profits on Saturday August 13 on The Green from 5–10 p.m. Local student band, Chip McGuire and The Renegades starts the music off, followed by the band, The VIBE playing favorites from the 80s through today's hits. Next up rock it out with Sunset Strip with classics. 100% of all ticket sales benefit the 3 non-profit organizations. Angels Among Us, Good Mews Animal Foundation, Wags & Wiggles and Rock for Rescues Foundation (Appen Media).
  3. The dogs are in for a treat. Cumming Aquatic Center will be hosting Dog Day at the Pool at its outdoor leisure pool Saturday September 10 from 1-4:30 p.m. Large dogs (45 pounds and larger) will enjoy the pool from 1-2 p.m. Small dogs (less than 45 pounds) will get to do their cannonballs from 2:15-3:15 p.m. And big dogs (45 pounds) will get to play Marco Polo from 3:30-4:30 p.m. The cost is $15. Be sure to register. (Cumming Aquatic Center).
  4. To commemorate the first year of the Tools for Schools grant program, Order Out of Chaos founder Leslie Josel will present a $5,000 grant to Mashburn Elementary Principal Steve Miller. The grant will be used to purchase a sandbox for the school's skills-based Autism classes and will be unveiled at the event scheduled at 4 p.m. today at the school. Also, in attendance at the ribbon cutting ceremony will be various Forsyth County school and public officials. This resource will allow neurodiverse students grades K-5 to safely dig, play and express their creativity (Order out of Chaos).
