15 Upcoming Family-Friendly Events at Marcus Jewish Community Center
The MJCCA has a full calendar of events this month, including a live comedy show and faith education classes.

Throughout September, the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta will host a series of fun and educational programs open to its members, as well as the wider Atlanta community. See the lineup below for more information about these events.
Lunch ‘N Learn Featuring Rabbi Adam Starr (Orthodox)

Swing Into Shabbat
When: Friday, Sept. 12, 5:00 – 7:00 pm
Where: MJCCA at Zaban Park Tennis Courts (5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody)
Cost: Free and open to the community
Details: Families are invited to slam, volley, and swing into Shabbat on the tennis courts at the JCC. Juan Arico and other coaches will be on hand to engage you and your children in activities and fun skill building sessions. Rabbi Glusman will lead Shabbat songs and blessings followed by a visit from the Weinstein School Shabbat Dinosaur! Challah and grape juice will be served. Children of all ages are welcome and should bring tennis racquets and wear comfortable clothing. Rain or shine.

Camp Barney Medintz (CBM) Open House

Details: Come see Camp Barney, take the deluxe tour guided by CBM staff, swim in the pool, woosh down the Hurricane Slide, and meet exotic animals. This program is for first-time campers as well as those considering Camp Barney for future summer seasons. Bring a picnic lunch and we will provide the snacks and drinks.

FROYosh Hashanah Holiday Party & Celebration

“Islam for Jews” Class

Details: This class is a great opportunity to gain a more complete understanding and appreciation for Islam and Muslims. In this course which will include visits to local mosques as well as Muslim guest speakers, we will explore questions such as: What role did Judaism play in the origin of Islam?; Who was Muhammad and what was his message?; What does Islam teach?; What’s in the Qur’an?; or Is Islam a religion of violence or peace?

“Not Yet Ready For Prime Time Women of the Bible” Class

Details: We are all familiar with the matriarchs Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah, but how about some of the other women who play significant roles in the Bible? This course will focus on some of the more obscure women: Potifar’s wife, Pharaoh’s daughter, Bityah; Rahab, Zeresh and others whose names are not as familiar.

“Our Master Story” Class
When: Tuesday, September 16, 10:45 - 11:45 am (30 lessons)

Details: Our Master Story continues as we complete the Book of Numbers. We will then begin our exploration of the final book of the Torah, Deuteronomy, in which Moses updates all of the Torah’s teachings for the Israelites, in preparation for their entering into the Promised Land. We begin with our own interpretations of the text, and then we enrich our understanding by studying the interpretations of medieval and contemporary commentators.

MJCCA’s Teen Community Service (TCS) Programs: BINGO at Hammond Glen Senior Community
When: Thursday, September 18, 7:30-8:30 pm
Where: Hammond Glen, 335 Hammond Glen Drive, Sandy Springs.
Who: Teens, Grades 6-12
Cost: Free and Open to the Community.
Details: Join TCS for an evening of fun and BINGO with the residents of Hammond Glen Senior Community, an assisted living home located in Sandy Springs. Teens will earn 1 service hour for participating. Pre-registration is required.

MJCCA’s Teen Community Service (TCS) Programs: Bake A Difference
When: Monday, September 22, 7:00-8:30 pm
Where: MJCCA (5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody)
Who: Teens, Grades 6-12
Cost: MJCCA Member: $10 / Community: $15
Details: Come together with other teens to ‘Bake a Difference’ in our community for those in need. Teens will prepare challah for Rosh HaShanah with a dash of patience and a pinch of creativity, while exploring issues of hunger and tzedakah. The challah will be donated to Hammond Glen Senior Community for their Rosh HaShanah celebrations. Teens will earn 1.5 community service hours. Pre-registration is required.

Where: Project Open Hand, 176 Ottley Dr NE, Atlanta, GA 30324
Who: Teens, Grades 6-12
Cost: MJCCA Member: $10 / Community: $12, includes 2 games and shoe rental.
Details: Project Open Hand delivers food to Atlanta’s home-bound and terminally ill. Join TCS as we prepare and package the deliveries for those in need. Teens will earn 2.5 community service hours.
