After attempted lifesaving measures, authorities said Abel was pronounced dead around 7:15 p.m.

An internal review is underway to investigate the circumstances surrounding Abel's death, authorities said. Foul play is not suspected, they added.

The DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office will determine an official cause of death.

Authorities arrested Abel on April 13 after accusing him of fatally shooting Department of Homeland Security staffer Lauren Bullis, Prianna Weathers and Tony Matthews.

All three shootings occurred that morning in Decatur, and state troopers arrested Abel that afternoon in Troup County, police previously said.

Bullis was killed while walking her dog at Battle Forest Drive, Department Secretary Markwayne Mullin said.

Weathers was fatally shot near a Wesley Chapel Road fast-food restaurant, and Matthews died in a shooting at a Peachtree Road shopping center, police said.

A motive has not been revealed in the shootings.

DeKalb County Jail records on Friday showed Abel faced three counts of malice murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon or first offender probationer. He was being held without bond.

Mullin said Abel, of the United Kingdom, was naturalized in 2022.
