Douglasville, Georgia- The Douglas County Chairman and Board of Commissioners proclaimed the week of October 6-12, 2019 as Fire Prevention Week throughout the county. The proclamation was announced at the Commission meeting on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 and read by Douglas County Fire Chief Scott Spencer.
Douglas County is known for its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our community. Fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally and homes are the locations where people are at the greatest risk from fire.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, home fires killed 2,630 people in the United States in 2017 and fire departments in the United States responded to 357,000 home fires. Therefore, fire prevention is of the upmost importance.
The proclamation of Fire Prevention Week is a reminder that Douglas County residents should make a home escape plan by drawing a map of each level of the home and should practice the plan with everyone in the household including visitors.
Residents should also ensure that everyone in the home knows how to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number from a cell phone or neighbor's phone. Once residents create a home escape plan and establish different ways of getting out of the home, residents should never go back inside the home for people, pets, or belongings.
For the 2019 Fire Prevention Week, the theme is "Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape" which effectively describes that we need to take personal accountability to increase our safety from fires.
Be aware of your surroundings, look for available ways out in the event of a fire or other emergencies and support the many public safety activities and efforts made by Douglas County's Fire and EMS Department.
