Boys & Girls Club Selects Youth of the Year 2013

On July 19, during a highly structured interview process for competition among seven highly capable candidates for Douglas County’ Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year selection, Nubia Livermore emerged successful.  Nubia was selected as Youth of the Month in April and subsequently appeared on TV 23’s segment “Hometown Hero” and was featured by Metro Atlanta Boys and Girls Club as a part of its “75 Blue Door” program in celebration of its 75th anniversary for her poetry and art. Nubia is a home-schooled, 3.7 GPA rising high school junior. She plans to continue to write poetry while examining a future in law. She captivated the judges with her presentation, her academic and creative accomplishments and earnest love for “her Club.” First runner up Pherow Drain is a promising young man with a keen interest in technology and computer programming whose ability to convey his passion for the Club made the judges take note of his special talents as a public speaker.  Second runner up was Dishawn Cullen whose preparation and delivery made him a true standout and polished competitor.  Davidae Walker, Youth of the Year Committee Chair noted, “The 2013 Youth of the Year Program is a resounding success culminating in one of the best Youth of the Year competitions I have yet to experience…. ” Judges for the selection were Board Members Reverend John William Pinson, Pastor of Douglasville’s First United Methodist Church, Mike Stephens, Senior Vice President / Senior Commercial Lender Metro Bank Douglasville, and Elvina Calland. Additional judges included friends of the Board and Club supporters Carol Rozier and Lyndan Lakes.

Youth of the Year is a multi-tiered awards program developed by the Boys& Girls Clubs of America.  It fosters competition among local clubs’ brightest, club-dedicated, academically and civically motivated club members. This is an achievement-based, progressive competition that takes place on local, district, statewide, and national platforms.  At each level, competitors are exposed to the value of vying for this honor, progressive levels of monetary awards such as scholarships, and ultimately the opportunity to be a nationally recognized Boys & Girls Club ambassador. The Douglas County Club is most proud of all of its candidates who were all exceptional and wishes Nubia success in her effort to progress to the nationals.
